The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLBA) calls for standardized testing and the sub-grouping of racial groups. I live in one of the poorest, most Hispanic-dominant regions of the country (although my family is not economically disadvantaged). I also earned a 1600 on my SAT and National Merit Scholar status, which I can attribute in large part to the rigorous curriculum of advanced classes my school offers.

However, last year my Chemistry II and physics class had to slow down to review for a statewide standardized test. We had to quit our kinematics review for - what mind-boggling concept? - lab safety rules. Most rules are common sense but are worded strangely, which reduces the science section to an interpretation of semantics. These tests do not reward knowledge or understanding, they reward memory refreshing (at least for advanced classes). Until there is some sort of test exemption for those taking advanced classes, this act will impede the progress of upper-echelon students.

But what truly bothers me is the thought (or lack thereof) involved in racial division. Why should I be placed in a different group than one of my classmates who so happens to be Caucasian? Aren’t we one class, collectively? Are we held to different standards? Are we taught differently? The notion is utterly ridiculous and illogical, and I am somewhat offended by it. The premise of free education is that everyone learns and is held to a given standard. This act stops just short of saying, “Hispanics are held to one standard, blacks to another, whites to a different one,” and so forth. Every student needs challenges and high standards, not freebies. All that requires is teaching, and if for some reason economically different areas have corresponding grades, then it is obvious that something needs to be changed immediately.
